Down to it. If you went to your Analytics right now, and checked the Behaviour > Site content section, I’m betting your homepage comes up as the top traffic driver?

I know this was the case for my site up until recently, and I’m guessing it’s the same for you.

Well, let me tell you a story….

relationships

Around a year ago, I identified a search term (well, really a topic) that my audience searched for a LOT. Think millions of searches on every possible combination of the main ‘head term’.

I then created a nice long article on this topic (via outsourcing it to a writer in fact).

I published it, and then just….left it. No promotion, no link-building, nothing. I just said I’d publish and let it marinate 🙂

Have a look at the trend over the past year.

traffic graph before
As you can see, not a long of action for a long time, with around 50 pageviews per day just over a year ago. That equates to around 50 people landing on the page each day.

Now, check out the after picture.

traffic graph after
I’ve gone from getting around 50 visitors a day to a stage where around 1,000 people visit this page on my site every day. I’ve just checked and this one page has had 34,821 page views in the last 30 days.

What made the difference? Well, this did:

linking domains
What I’ll also mention is that this target topic has a LOT of competition on Google. Think big websites with vast amount of content, highly established and with some significant authority too (think RD.com – Readers Digest).

But all it took was getting a link (which came organically, I had no part in it!), to skyrocket the authority of this page and the traffic it generated.

The linking website itself is a huge, high authority site and the article writer obviously found my page via a Google search and linked to it within his piece.

So, what’s the takeaway?

Well, here’s what:

Step 1) Look for a BIG keyword or topic that’s relevant to your audience. Go do it now. Seriously.

Step 2) Create a piece of content based around the topic / keyword you’d happily read and find value from yourself.

Notice I didn’t say ‘epic’ or ‘high quality’, because you hear that too often and I don’t want to put you off doing it.

And also because the two qualities I mention in bold are enough to get you that big link.

Step 3) Go out and look for links from high authority sites…or, like me, do nothing at all 😉 Give it a while and work on raising the overall authority and trustworthiness of your site. If you do that, all boats will rise over time.

Let me know what you think of this technique and whether you’ll try it!
